Art Curriculum Intent

Art is a vital part of children’s education; It provides them with a visual language through which they can share and express their individual creativity and explore the many ways in which artists from different times and cultures respond to the world around them.
Our Curriculum will equip students with the practical skills in drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture and mixed media but will also provoke curiosity, expect ambition, develop studentship and provide challenge and support for all our learners.

The Art Curriculum at Horizon

Our learners need to be visually literate. We teach them to understand and translate what they see in the world around them using the formal elements of line, tone , colour etc. Using works of art  from different times and cultures, we build their understanding and confidence and encourage them to articulate their thoughts , ideas and opinions.
Our curriculum builds practical skills in using materials, tools and techniques. From the basic principles of how to hold a pencil to working with acrylic paint, printmaking and digital photography, over time our students experience a wide range of learning opportunities.  As they progress, we expect them to draw on their growing abilities and make their own choices about how they will make art to suit their own independent ideas and influences from other artists.

Key STRANDS

Identify formal elements in visual images.

Students will learn about how artists employ the formal elements of line, tone, colour, form , composition etc. in their work and analyse works of art using our Content , Form , Process, Mood framework. They will use writing to express their findings and opinions.
Students have opportunities to work from first hand observation looking at many sources of inspiration: from faces to glass bottles, architecture to African masks. They are taught to actively observe and translate the visual and tactile qualities they see into their drawing and articulate the visual qualities they observe.

Observation skills

Research and investigation

We expect our learners to research the work of artists and to find their own sources of inspiration. We run extracurricular trips to galleries and museums to support their learning.

Students are taught how to draw but not merely with pencil. The wider principles of ‘drawing’ can be applied to coloured media, photography, print-making and sculpture. In their time with us they will experience a wide range of artistic processes and techniques ultimately choosing their own ways of working from the growing repertoire of practical skills.

the use of different tools, materials and techniques

Developing a personal response

Our learners have the opportunity to work as artists; selecting, designing and experimenting with materials and ideas to produce their own unique and personal outcome.
