Year 8 School Hub

A warm welcome to the Year 8 School Webpage.

During their second year at Horizon, our students continue their journey through secondary school at Key Stage 3. This year is the beginning of the transition into becoming a young adult; and we expect our Year 8 students to use their time at school very wisely, making the most of their lessons and building upon the positive relationships they have built with their peers and teachers in the previous year.

Personal development is very important, and students have a wide array of experiences open to them through the Careers and Enterprise Team throughout the year.

Celebration is a key part of the year, with academic, personal and attendance achievement celebrated throughout the year.

Curriculum

Students in Y8 follow a broad and balanced curriculum studying the following subjects: English, Mathematics, Science, MFL, History, Geography, Technology, Art, Music, Drama, RE, PE, Citizenship and Computing.

Students revisit key concepts throughout the year to develop their recall skills, develop subject knowledge and gain a greater understanding. This includes skills taught in Y7.

Assessment is ongoing throughout the year, including three formal assessment points where students are assessed against key skills and knowledge. Individual targets are derived from Key Stage 2 data. Effort grades along with academic performance is rigorously analysed to ensure that all students are making progress relevant to their starting point. Data is shared with students during form time, which is a great opportunity for them to reflect upon their subject strengths and passions and ensure they are working to the best of their efforts and abilities.

Bespoke support is available to ensure all students can access subjects across the curriculum. There is a strong focus on literacy and numeracy skills, as these are the building blocks to future success.

The curriculum on offer is designed to Challenging Every Learner, Every Lesson, Every day, from their first lesson in Y8 to their last.

Our Charity

The Year 8 school have developed links with Bluebell Wood Children`s hospice looking at a range of ways to support and raise funds throughout the academic year.

Bluebell Wood is a home from home for families facing the toughest of times, with a comfy lounge and beautiful gardens. They are always cooking up mouth-watering meals and tasty treats in the kitchen for families. There is also plenty of fun activities for children to try, including soft play, arts and crafts, music therapy and much more.

They believe that every family deserves to make magical memories with their child, whether they have years, months, weeks or days together.
