This half term has seen an all year group enterprise activity for the Y7 school hosted and held at Wentworth Woodhouse. This historic building is currently being renovated and will take 25 years to restore to its former glory at an estimated cost of £150 million pounds. Apart from its fantastic history it has and is being used for some of the film and TV industries most famous costume dramas. Victoria and the Oscar winning film The Darkest Hour have all used it for location filming and in September it will be seen in the new Downton Abbey movie. This project has seen all of Y7 spend a day in the building coming up with attractions that will encourage people to visit the house and grounds.
The aim of the day was to allow students to work together to develop a creative idea to encourage young people to visit Wentworth Woodhouse. Each day started with the students splitting into teams and forming companies to develop their ideas which they then presented to local business people and Wentworth Woodhouse staff in the afternoon. Each team (company) had a Managing Director, Marketing Team, Social Enterprise Team and a Creative Team. The students started with a tour of the building and grounds given by the Wentworth Woodhouse guides and then had training sessions for each of their roles. The skills that they learnt throughout the day included presentation, leadership and teamwork but also gave them all an opportunity to be a part of the Wentworth story.
There were some brilliant ideas from Escape Rooms to Murder Mystery Sleepovers and Food Festivals and Funfairs. Retro gaming days were also popular and ghost hunting. There were also attractions that included sports activities and treasure hunts. The whole year group represented the school superbly in the local community and on several of the days there were live tours with the paying public that the students had to be really mindful of. Feedback from the students has been brilliant and reflects what an opportunity this was. The ideas and concepts that the students have developed have been taken forward by the Wentworth Team as serious proposals for future events and attractions, so it really was about contributing to the local community as well as developing skills that will help them throughout their time at Horizon and the world beyond.
